The World Commemorates World Aids Today
Today is World Aids Day. The disease, which kills about 3 000 people a week, has also been a victim of the larger political crisis bedeviling the country. ARV’s are in short supply, with the few available being routed to the elite few who have the right political connections.
Here are some statistics journos can use in their reporting of Aids from Zimbabwe Aids Relief
·The population of Zimbabwe is 12 million people
·The HIV infection rate is 26% !
·Only 27,000 of the 1.3 million Zimbabweans who need HIV medicines are receiving any
·We're providing 465 of the 27,000 people (nearly 2% !) with their AIDS meds
·The average life expectancy in Zimbabwe for women is now 33 years and for men it is 37 years
·There are now over 1 million children in Zimbabwe who have already been orphaned due to AIDS !
·Over 3,000 people die each week in Zimbabwe due to AIDS
